About Angela

who i am

I’m Angela Wynn: a mother, wife, advocate, and community leader running for Tennessee State Senate District 13. I moved to Tennessee in 2015 with my now-husband, and later that year we welcomed our daughter. That season of life changed me, grounded me, and deepened my commitment to building a better future for families like mine.

I was a single mom for many years, surviving two abusive long-term relationships. That lived experience shaped my values and sparked my interest in advocacy when I first moved to Tennessee in 2015. I know what it means to need support, to need safety, and to need someone willing to stand up and say, “You matter.”

My personal story is also why maternal health is so important to me. As a mom of five, I’ve experienced pregnancy-induced complications, and I was fortunate to have providers who spoke up for me and made sure I received the care I needed. Too many women in Tennessee are not getting that same level of advocacy, and I want to change that. No woman should have to wonder whether she will be heard, believed, or protected.

Professionally, I bring more than 20 years of experience in advocacy, public engagement, donor relations, and organizational leadership. I’ve worked with the YWCA, where I saw firsthand how important it is to stand with women and families when life gets hard, and with The Decarceration Collective, where I deepened my belief that justice should be fair, practical, and focused on helping people move forward.

Those roles taught me how to manage complex responsibilities, build strong teams, and get things done without losing sight of people. They also shaped my belief in common-sense justice: we should invest in people and communities, not rely on private incarceration systems that profit from punishment, and we should do more to block the school-to-prison pipeline by strengthening schools, families, and neighborhoods instead of funneling people into systems of harm. That is the kind of leadership I will bring to the Tennessee State Senate.

My advocacy has always centered on women, children, families, and public education. I’ve worked with Homeland Heart because maternal health outcomes matter, and I’ve helped lead TSU’s Black Maternal Health events because I believe awareness should lead to action. Whether I’m in a boardroom, a classroom, or a community space, my focus stays the same: people deserve dignity, opportunity, and a fair shot.
